Ultrasound is not an “X-ray”, it is done through “ultra sound” waves, and can help us detect if a lump is cystic or solid.
It can also help as an additional tool to mammograms in cases where women have dense breasts (meaning a lot of normal glandular tissue).
It is not the primary method for early breast cancer detection on its own. Yet, it is advisable in women with symptoms eg lump, pain, discharge who are under 30 years of age.
How is it done ?
You will be asked to lie down on a bed beside the ultrasound machine, the breast radiologist will place gel and scan your breasts and underarms with a special probe. She will usually tell you the result straight away. The procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
