Illustration of a breast MRI procedure in Dubai showing a patient undergoing magnetic resonance imaging for breast cancer detection.

What is breast MRI ?

An MRI (Stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a test that uses magnetic fields to create detailed images of the body. When performed on the breast it provides high-resolution images of breast tissue, allowing for the detection of smaller lesions or abnormalities that might be missed by mammography or ultrasound.

It is indicated for screening women at high risk of breast cancer, and women who have suspected breast cancer for a more detailed assessment.

It is the gold standard for imaging women with breast implants, and is a valuable tool for women who have had previous surgery. Sometimes it can help in problem solving of abnormalities detected by mammography or ultrasound.

How is it done ?

First the nurse will check your weight, and introduce a canula in your hand/arm. After that she will prepare you in the MRI room, by asking you to lie down in the prone position (face down) with your breasts positioned in two openings. She will give you a small hand bell to press if you need any assistance during the scan.  After the exam starts by 10 minutes approximately, a contrast agent will be injected, and this is the most important part of the examination; it’s very important not to move. The procedure takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and your results will be ready within 24 to 48 hours.
